Many of us are very protective of our privacy, and this includes wanting to keep to ourselves which websites we visit. This becomes a concern, though, if multiple users use the same PC or if someone else needs to borrow our laptop or desktop. Therefore, it would be good to learn how to check the history on a computer and clear it when necessary.
How to Check History on Computer with Google Chrome
If you use Google Chrome, then you will find the [Customize and control Google Chrome] button, which appears as three dots, on the upper right-hand corner of your screen.
In the drop-down menu, hover over [History] and another menu will appear. Click on [History] or, alternatively, you can type [Ctrl + H].
You will be taken to your Chrome history page where you will see a list of all the websites you visited, arranged from latest to oldest.
If you want to clear your browsing history, you can select [Clear browsing data] from the menu on the left.
A pop-up window will appear. From there, you can select the types of browsing data you wish to delete and how far back you want to go. If you want everything cleared, select [the beginning of time] from the drop-down menu.
If you want to delete only specific items from your list, click the [action] button on the right, depicted by three dots, and select [Remove from history].
You can also select several items by checking the boxes on the left side of each, then click the [DELETE] button on the upper right-hand corner.
How to Check History on Computer with Mozilla Firefox
For the Mozilla Firefox browser, look for the Firefox menu, depicted by three lines, on the upper right-hand corner of your screen.
Select [History], and you will see a list of the websites you visited.
If you want to remove the list, then select [Clear Recent History].
Select how far back in time you want to clear, then click [Details] so you can choose which information you want to remove.
Click [Clear Now].
How to Check History on Computer with Microsoft Edge
On the upper right-hand corner of the Microsoft Edge browser, you will see [Hub], depicted by three lines.
Click [Hub] and select the [History] icon, which looks like a clock.
If you want to delete your whole browsing history, select [Clear all history].
You will be asked to choose which of your browsing data you want to clear. After ticking your choices, click [Clear].
If you want to delete items individually, then select either [Last week] or [Older], choose the website you want to get rid of, and click [X].
How to Check History on Computer with Safari
To see which websites you visited using Safari, go to the browser’s menu at the top of the screen and select [History].
A drop-down menu will appear showing your most recently visited websites as well as sub-menus of your earlier browsing data.
If you want to remove the list, select [Clear History] at the bottom and identify how far back in time you want to clear. If you want to select only a few items, right-click the ones you want to remove and click [Delete].
How to Check History on Computer with Opera
If you want to delete your browsing data in Opera, go to the main menu.
Click the tab on the left labeled [History].
Choose [Clear Browsing Data]. Check which browsing data and how far back in time you want to clear.
How to Check History on Computer with Internet Explorer
To see a list of the websites you visited using Internet Explorer, click the [Favorites] button, which appears as a star, located on the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Select the [History] tab from the menu, and you will be given an option to sort by date, site, most visited, and so on. To clear specific sites, right-click on the website that you want to clear, then choose [Delete].
To clear your browsing history in IE 8, select [Safety] → [Delete Browsing History] → select the types of data you want to clear → [Delete].
For IE 9, you need to select [Tools], which may appear as a gear.
Choose [Internet Options].
Under [Browsing history], select [Delete].
To clear your browsing history in IE 10 and 11, select [Tools], which appears as a gear icon. Hover over [Safety] and select [Delete browsing history]. Choose which types of files you want to remove, then click [Delete].
In most cases, when you delete your browsing history, you can choose to also clear or otherwise retain your download history, cookies, cache, and/or passwords.
Remember, though, that it’s always a good idea to regularly check the history on the computer you’re using and clear your browsing data along with other sensitive information so you can protect your privacy, especially if you share your computer with other users.
